At this point in my career I have chosen to not participate in insurance panels because it pays less and takes a lot more time. Most of my clients come for referrals from the many people I have served over the years. My calendar is full so I am able to do what every therapist dreams of, spend my time helping people rather than fill out paper work and wait for payments. Many plans allow for out of network providers and will reimburse you. I provide receipts for that purpose.

While health insurance can be important when you have medical issues and expenses, you may want to consider the long-term implications and risks of using your insurance for therapy because insurance companies require a mental disorder diagnosis which becomes a part of your permanent medical record. Having a mental diagnosis on your record can hinder you from being able to obtain life insurance, disability or health insurance in the future and your diagnosis, dates of service, etc., are no longer totally confidential since the insurance company will be aware of your treatment and diagnosis.
